ATO LAB Plus is a unique compact machine for metal powders production using the latest ultrasonic atomization technology. Process automation in the measurement of size and morphology of materials provides faster, safer and more accurate data for process optimization. Currently many plants use laboratory-based measurements for quality and process control. This requires an operator to enter potentially dangerous parts of the facility, in order to grab a sample from the process line, walk it back to laboratory for sample preparation, measurement, evaluation and reporting. This process is rather slow and can take anything from 2 to 12 hours. During

that time material parameters can change and the process may be running at a suboptimal level, leading to poor quality material and the additional costs that inevitably arise from that. Real-time analyses in the process deliver immediate information which is critical to process and quality control. By making adjustments in real-time, the process will operate at maximum production levels, all the while virtually eliminating any unplanned downtime. Microtrac MRB’s patented 3D technology utilizes an innovative scheme of tracking particles, taking multiple images of each particle and measuring length, width, thickness, perimeter and area. This enables the calculation of more than 35 3D size and shape parameters that are extremely valuable and accurate for on-line analysis. Microtrac MRB’s patented 3D size and shape parameters enable you to measure characteristics of your product including sphericity, surface roughness, flakiness and aspect ratios utilizing the thickness. These types of measurements result in effective, lower cost coating or post processing, packaging, storage and shipment of your product. The CAMSIZER ONLINE system utilizes a funnel, vibrating tray, stroboscopic light, powerful high resolution, high speed camera and sophisticated software to perform the measurements. Particles are introduced to the vibrating tray via the funnel. The particles travel down the vibrating tray and fall, creating a tumbling motion. The Camsizer software tracks each particle as it falls through the sensing zone, taking up to 300 pictures per second. The software automatically aligns the particles for viewing (with 6-30 images of each particle). Particle size distributions utilizing one or multiple size parameters can be reported, and powerful filter functionality can enable the user to isolate groups of particles of particular interest to them and perform more targeted analysis.  The analyzer’s standard operating procedure (SOP) capability enables users to define their specific analysis and then continuously run their SOPs with no operator involvement, resulting in on-line analyses that are performed continuously and unattended. With the powerful reporting capabilities, plant operators are able to see the important 3D parameters for process control in real-time and run trend reports, enabling plants to anticipate problems before they occur. Furthermore, integration with your Data Control System (DCS) takes full advantage of existing inside operators who monitor every other aspect of your process. By utilizing an alarm feature or color-coded graphs on the DCS, out-of-control situations are known immediately and give your operators the ability to make real-time adjustments to keep the process running and in control. For larger materials (up to 150 mm) the CAMSIZER XL can also be used in process applications.

FERTILIZER: FULL MANUFACTURING PROCESS CONTROL

 

Drying. Particle size and Shape measurement of material coming from the Dryer is used to control the drying and granulation process. Data and information transferred directly to the Control Room allows for rapid adjustments to ensure product quality.

 

Sieving. Material coming from the dryer is transferred to storage silos through a sieving process. Coarse and fine material will be sieved out and the on-specification material goes to storage. Real time control of product quality ensures correct operation of the sieving process.

EXPANDABLE POLYSTYRENE (EPS):  QUALITY CONTROL VIA REAL-TIME ANALYSES

 

Particle size and roundness are critical parameters determining quality of EPS. Material is sent to sieves to separate coarse and fine material. Real-time measurement of size and roundness at this point allows faster control to maximize output of quality product. Particle size is important in the ability of mate- rials to absorb moisture. Overpopulation of fine material inhibits that ability. CAMSIZER ON- LINE monitors particle size and provides the control room with the information required to minimize fine material in the process.

EXTRUDATES: PRECISE & FAST 3D MEASUREMENT

 

A highly viscous paste is pressed through a matrix and cut with a sharp knife. The material in use can consist of plastic granules, extru- dates, washing powder, or something similar. The on-line measurement ensures a continu- ous size and shape information in real-time. Extruded particles usually have the shape of small cylinders. The CAMSIZER ONLINE measures the length to thickness ratio of the cylinders, as well as the total size of the parti- cles. This is made possible by the patented 3D capabilities of the CAMSIZER ONLINE. The 3D measurement consequently ensures reliable and fast results on the quality of the granulate.

BULK MATERIAL: RELIABLE MATERIAL CHECK AT LOADING STATIONS

 

In many cases, bulk materials are first stored before being shipped as raw product to other processors. When bulk material is loaded onto trains, ships or trucks, it is important to be able to assure the end users that the loaded mate- rial exactly meets the specifications. In the past, this quality control was performed via sieve analysis. In that case, the samples are manually taken and sent to the laboratory. There, the sieve analysis is performed and within 30 to 60 minutes the results are trans- mitted to the operators at loading station. With the CAMSIZER ONLINE, fast measure- ments are possible within 5 to 10 minutes. In addition, the results are immediately report- ed to the control room. This means that the quality is analyzed in real-time during the hold loading process.

The CAMSIZER 3D particle analyzer combines all the advantages of dynamic image analysis (ISO 13322-2) in a completely redesigned measuring system, setting new standards in the characterization of bulk solids. The CAMSIZER 3D utilizes a funnel, vibrating feed chute, LED strobe backlighting, powerful high-speed cameras, and sophisticated software to perform the measurements. The particles travel down the vibrating feeder and fall into the sensing zone, creating a tumbling motion as they fall. The CAMSIZER software tracks each particle as it passes between light source and cameras, taking up to 250 images per second. As the particle is tracked, multiple images are recorded, measuring length, width, thickness, perimeter, area and various shape descriptors. The software automatically aligns the images for viewing, with up to 30 images per particle. This creates a “particle track”, a sequence of images of the same particle in different orientations. From this, distributions can be calculated, based on one or more size or shape parameters. EXTREMELY WIDE MEASURING RANGE DUE TO DUAL CAMERA TECHNOLOGY

 

Microtrac’s unique dual camera technology is a landmark in the development of Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA). By simultaneously employing two cameras with different magnifications, extremely wide dynamic measuring ranges are archieved. This is accomplished without hardware adjustments or modifications and without compromising accuracy. Each camera is specialized for one measuring range.

The ZOOM camera analyzes fine particles with highest precision whereas the BASIC camera detects the larger particles with excellent statistics. A special algorithm combines the information provided by both cameras and delivers the exact size distribution in a possible range of more than three decades!

Traditional sieve analysis frequently forms the basis for quality standards and product specifications between suppliers and customers. NEW POSSIBILITIES IN SHAPE ANALYSIS

 

In contrast, traditional 2D analysis captures only one image per particle in random orientation, even if the particle in measured multiple times at increased acquisition rate, there is no “mapping” of one image to another. Each individual image is treated as a new, independent measurement event. The true length, width, thickness, and shape is obscured by this. Rather, the “length” measured in 2D mode is a mixture between true 3D length and true 3D width; the “width” measured in 2D mode is a mixture between true 3D width and true 3D thickness. Only if the particles can be mechanically aligned, meaningful results are obtained in 2D mode. In the past, however, this was only feasible for some special particle shapes like cylinders.

Microtrac offers various sets of feed hoppers and chutes for specific applications. With the help of the feed guides, the sample stream can be oriented in a way that, for example, longish particles like extrudates are always measured in the correct orientation.

CALIBRATION RETICLE

A certified reference object is available for the CAMSIZER 3D, which allows the user to calibrate the device in a few seconds. This object is a glass pane that is inserted precisely into the measuring zone. Circles of various sizes are lithographically applied to the calibration reticle. The reproduction scale of the cameras is determined by measuring the circles. After completion of the calibration process, a protocol can be printed to document the proper condition of the CAMSIZER 3D.

 

 

 

FEEDER AND FUNNEL KITS
Different chutes and funnel sets are available for the CAMSIZER 3D, which are suitable for different sample volumes and particle size ranges. In 3D mode, the width of the feeder has an influence on the number of particle images in the 3D tracks, as narrower chutes enable a higher acquisition rate due to the reduced image size. However, the use of narrow chute increases the measurement time. MICROTRAC will be happy to advise you on the selection of the most suitable configuration for your application.

 

 

 

GUIDANCE SHEETS
Guidance sheets are devices that channel the sample flow before it enters the measurement zone. This can be advantageous, for example, if particlesjump חס the chute due to their mechanical properties. The long shield prevents the particles from being thrown over the measuring shaft and guides them into the focal zone. Guidance sheets also provide protection from air currents that could cause unwanted turbulence in the measurement zone.

AUDIT TRAIL MANAGER
The Audit Trail Manager is a software extension that enables operation in accordance with the specifications of the 21 CFR part 11 This standard is particularly relevant in the pharmaceutical industry and its suppliers. The program option offers extensive user administration with various access levels and logs all processes in an encrypted database, the Audit Trail. Measurement results can be electronically signed for quality assurance.

 

 

SAMPLE SPLITTERS
Any measurement is only as good as the sampling and sample preparation that preceded it. Particularly in the case of flowable bulk solids with a broad distribution, segregation will occur and lead to a wrong distribution of particle sizes in the sample aliquot. By using a sample divider, representative subsamples can be easily generated, guaranteeing a representative and meaningful result. MICROTRAC strongly recommends riffle splitters and rotary sample dividers from Retsch, also part of the Verder Scientific Croup.

 

 

AUTOSAMPLER FOR BATCH PROCESSING

The Autosampler is a fully automatic sample feeding system for the CAMSIZER 3D which can be easily retrofitted to existing instruments. It processes up to 14 samples (extendable to 40 samples or more) in a row without the need for the operator’s intervention. The correct measurement settings can be read from the barcodes on the sample beaker. The Autosampler is suitable for continuous operation and allows effortlessly measuring more than 150 samples per day, even by untrained operators.

The CAMSIZER X2 is a powerful, extremely versatile particle size and shape analyzer with a wide measuring range that combines state-of-the-art camera technology with flexible dispersion options. Based on the principle of Dynamic Image Analysis (ISO 13322-2), the CAMSIZER X2 provides precise particle size and shape information of powders, granules and suspensions in a measuring range from 0.8 μm to 8 mm. The CAMSIZER X2 produces a particle flow which is characterized by an optical system with high resolution. An ultrabright LED stroboscopic light sources and two high-resolution digital cameras achieve a frame rate of more than 300 images per second which are evaluated in real time by a powerful software. Thus, the CAMSIZER X2 captures the images of hundreds of thousands to several millions of particles with highest accuracy within only 1 to 3 minutes. The CAMSIZER X2 provides a wide selection of particle information which allows for comprehensive and reliable characterization of the sample material. It is suitable for use in R&D as well as for routine tasks in quality control.

EXTREMELY WIDE MEASURING RANGE DUE TO DUAL CAMERA TECHNOLOGY

 

Microtrac’s unique dual camera technology is a landmark in the development of Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA). By simultaneously employing two cameras with different magnifications, extremely wide dynamic measuring ranges are archieved. This is accomplished without hardware adjustments or modifications and without compromising accuracy. Each camera is specialized for one measuring range.

The ZOOM camera analyzes fine particles with highest precision whereas the BASIC camera detects the larger particles with excellent statistics. A special algorithm combines the information provided by both cameras and delivers the exact size distribution in a possible range of more than three decades!

This arrangement resolves a significant drawback of many image analysis systems that employ only one camera, e. g. microscopes. Such instruments either cannot correctly report the fine particles in wide size distributions, or the large particles are not captured due to the small field of view.

 


MODULAR X-CHANGE SYSTEM

 

Correct sample preparation and dispersion of the particles before they pass the measurement field are as important as the actual analysis. Particularly for fine powders which tend to agglomerate, sufficient dispersion is crucial to the reliability of the measurement results. Therefore, various modes of sample feeding help to achieve separation of the agglomerates without destroying individual particles. Our Modular X-Change System fulfils this requirement in a perfect way.

 

ELABORATE DESIGN FOR MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY

 

The CAMSIZER X2’s modular “X-Change” system offers three alternative dispersion options, permitting the selection of the optimum method for each sample type. The user may choose between wet dispersion with X-Flow or dry measurement either in free fall with X-Fall or in an air flow with X-Jet. The modules and cartridges are quickly and easily exchanged which makes working with the CAMSIZER X2 convenient and safe.

DISPERSION BY COMPRESSED AIR

The X-Jet module disperses the sample via a Venturi nozzle and is suitable for the effective analysis of powders. The actual measurement of the particles takes place in the air stream. Dispersion pressure may be set between 0 kPa and 460 kPa. This ensures optimum analysis conditions for all sample types.

 

 

DISPERSION IN LIQUIDS

CAMSIZER X2 also offers the option to analyze particles in liquids with the X-Flow module. The suspension flows in a closed circle through a glass cell where the cameras record the particle images. The integrated ultrasonic unit further aids in the dispersion process. 

 

 

DISPERSION BY GRAVITY

The X-Fall module is used for non-destructive measurement of sensitive samples in free fall to minimize particle breakage. The sample can be recovered after the analysis.

AIR PRESSURE DISPERSION WITH X-JET

Many materials tend to agglomerate due to surface forces. The X-Jet module effectively disperses the particles in an air flow while passing through a Venturi nozzle. The dispersion pressure can be set as required for individual particles. For sensitive granules, for example, reduced pressure ensures non-destructive measurement. After passing the measurement field, the sample is automatically removed from the analyzer by a vacuum cleaner.

 

WET MEASUREMENT WITH X-FLOW

The wet module X-Flow analyzes suspensions in a size range from 0.8 μm to 1 mm. The sample moves within a closed loop from the dispersion bath to the flow cell where the camera system captures the particle images. X-Flow comes with an ultrasonic bath and strong centrifugal pump to ensure efficient dispersion. Suitable dispersion media are water, alcohol, and also nonpolar organic solvents.

 

GRAVITY DISPERSION WITH X-FALL

Flowable, unagglomerated samples can be analyzed by using the X-Fall module. The measurement is non-destructive because the particles directly fall from a chute through the field of view. X-Fall is suitable for particle sizes up to 8 mm; the detection sensitivity for over-sized grains is extremely high. In contrast to dispersion by air pressure, the sample can be recovered after the measurement with X-Fall.



COMPARABILITY TO SIEVE ANALYSIS AND LASER DIFFRACTION

 

„Size“ is only defined unambiguously for spherical particles: the diameter is identical in all directions and orientations. For non-spherical particles, however, the dimensions can vary strongly, depending on the orientation and direction of measurement. Traditional sieve analysis, for example, separates particles on a wire mesh sieve stack with different aperture sizes into fractions.

The smallest possible sieve aperture that a particle can pass is defined by the particle’s smallest projection area. Hence, sieve analysis measures particles in a preferential orientation and provides information which is mostly based on the width of the particle. Particle size analysis with Laser Diffraction (LD) relates all measuring data to the diameter of a spherical particle model. Only dynamic image analysis offers different size definitions which can be ascertained simultaneously. This makes the results comparable to those obtained with other techniques. The outstanding strength of DIA is the possibility to measure width and length of a particle and to provide a size distribution based on these parameters. The particle width (red curve) can easily be compared to sieve analysis results.


ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS

 

Microtrac offers a variety of hoppers and chutes for special applications. Dispersion nozzles and cuvettes are available in different aperture sizes to ensure optimum conditions for each measurement. Calibration of the CAMSIZER X2 only takes one minute and can be carried out by using a high-precision reference reticle.

HOPPERS AND CHUTES

To achieve optimum feeding conditions, even for adhesive powders, we offer different chutes made of either stainless steel or aluminium hard-coat. 
The hoppers can be made of aluminium or stainless steel and can hold up to 0,6 l of sample. The hopper is adjustable in height which promotes uniform flow of the sample.



DISPERSION NOZZLES

There are nozzle sets with different sizes of the orifice available for the X-Jet module. The standard aperture is 14 mm x 4 mm which is suitable for most samples to be analyzed. For very large or very small particles, other nozzle sizes can be advantageous.



REFERENCE OBJECT

By using a high precision reference object made by electron lithography, which simulates differently sized particles, the CAMSIZER can be recalibrated in a few seconds at any time. This means that the requirements of modern test agent monitoring are fulfilled.

PROTECTIVE HOOD (X-JET, X-FALL)

The protective hood prevents the release of dust to the environment during the measurement. It can be flushed with inert gas for samples that should not be too long exposed to the ambient air. Furthermore, the hood will reduce the noise level by more than 5 dB. 


FREEFALL SHAFTS (X-FALL)

For the X-Fall module, the standard aperture is 7 mm x 14 mm, for larger particles a freefall unit with 14 mm x 14 mm is available.


CUVETTES (X-FLOW)

Three high quality quartz glass cuvettes are available for the X-Flow module. The cuvettes have different gap widths of either 4 mm (standard), 2 mm or 1 mm.
